Speaker's Profile

Dr. Phang Cheng Kar is a psychiatrist with special interest in mindfulness-based psychotherapies. He’s currently practicing in Kuala Lumpur Hospital, and also lecturing in Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) Medical School. He is the author of the book, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy – a medical student’s motivational and inspirational guide”. Subsequently, he compiled two volumes of “Don’t Worry, Be Healthy – A Buddhist Guide for Health and Healing”. He’s also the President of Kuala Lumpur Buddhist Mental Health Association (BMHA), and a volunteer at the Sentul Buddhist Temple Free Medical Clinic.

Speaker's Profile

Bro Mui Han has been a Buddhist since the age of 13. He started active Buddhist work in his secondary school Buddhist Society. He was the President of St. John’s Institution Buddhist Society KL from 1993 – 1997. His other appointments include EDSG Director in Persatuan Buddhis UPM (PBUPM) in 1999/2000 and were a member of the first Nalanda Buddhist Society, Serdang (NBS) committee in 2003/2004, Committee member of Buddhist Missionary Society Malaysia (BMSM) Youth Section (2006-2010) and member of Aloka Foundation Management Committee (2008-2010).

Bro Mui Han also co-founded a youth group in 1998 and was later formalize to be known as Dhammaduta Youths (D2Y) in 2000. D2Y have been running annual year-end Buddhist camps for secondary school students since 1998 till today. D2Y seeks contemporary ways of understanding the sublime Buddhist teachings through total engagement with youths. In experimenting with various forms of media (including an accapella choir group), D2Y challenges Buddhist Youths today to re-evaluate their principles in living, a competitive and challenging world today.

Professionally, Mui Han is currently a Senior Consultant for a Human Capital consulting firm. Besides providing Human Capital consulting solutions to companies, he delivers a series of management & leadership training courses.

Speaker's Profile

VenKumāraBhikkhu was ordained in 1999 at the age of 27 by Sayadaw U Revata at Subang Jaya Buddhist Association. Currently, he resides in Sāsanārakkha Buddhist Sanctuary (www.sasanarakkha. org), and serves as VenAggacittaMahāthera’s personal assistant.

The venerable graduated with a degree in education (teaching English as a second language) from the University of Malaya. It was during his studies there that he became enthusiastic about the Buddha's teachings and decided that he wanted to live this life as a monk. Since then, with his training in education, he has been sharing the Dhamma in various ways and in several languages (mainly English, Mandarin and Hokkien) with Buddhists of various traditions and non-Buddhists too. VenerableKumāra is interested in any spiritual teaching that shows how to cultivate wisdom and remove the causes of suffering. Having discovered happiness through this, he is happy to help others do so too.

Besides learning and practicing the DhammaVinaya, he practices intuitive energyworks to promote health and healing.

Rescheduling of Vassa Rains Retreat Program

For your info, the Invitation Ceremony which was supposed to be held yesterday evening was called off after we received special announcement from Sangha Council in Sri Lanka in the morning.  The Council has advised that monks should observe Vassa after the full moon day of August since August month has two (2) full moon days.

As such, we have to reschedule the Invitation Ceremony and Vassa Rains Retreat Program.  We will inform you of the changes including the 100 days Chanting at a later date.

Speaker's Profile


Benny Liow Woon Khin is the editor of Eastern Horizon, a tri-annual journal of the Young Buddhist Association of Malaysia.  He is also the Editorial Consultant and contributor to the "Religions and Beliefs" volume of the Encyclopedia of Malaysia (2006).

His writings have appeared in numerous journal, including Journal of the Malaysian Branch of the Royal  Asiatic Society and in "Nurturing Child and Adolescent Spirituality: Perspectives from the World's Religious Traditions" (Rowan & Littlefield: Minneapolis, USA, 2006).

He edited three volumes in honor of the well-known Malaysian Buddhist missioner, Venerable Datuk K. Sri Dhammananda: "K.Sri Dhammananda: A Pictorial Retrospect (2000)", "K. Sri Dhammananda Felicitation (2003)", and "108 Treasures for the Heart: A Guide to Daily Living (2005)".

His most recent editorial contribution is "Transforming the Mind: To Create Happiness in our Lives" (2008).

Bro Benny holds a BA (Honors) Education degree from Universiti Sains Malaysia and a M.P.A. degree from  University of Malaya.

He is employed as an  Executive Director with an international company in Malaysia.

VASSANA KALO (This is the time to observe Rains Retreat) - Invitation Ceremony

We are pleased to inform you that the Resident Monk in Ti-Ratana Lumbini Garden, together with another two (2) Sri Lankan monks will observe Vassa Retreat in the Centre after the full Moon Day of 2nd August 2012.  Duration of the Vassa period is 3 months starting from 3rd August 2012.

During Vassa Retreat, devotees are encouraged to provide the 4 requisites to the Bhantes, namely Robes, Food, Accommodation and Medicines.

Bhantes will be leading blessing services on requests, conducting 100 days evening prayers and meditation sessions so that devotees can develop their spirituality.

At the end of the Vassa Retreat, devotees will have a great opportunity to perform a Kathina Ceremony (which is one of the greatest and most meritorious activity).

Therefore we are going to invite the Bhantes to observe Vassa as follows :

On every Saturday, there will be 28 Buddhas puja during the Rains Retreat.

Devotees are encouraged to join in the evening chanting sessions and 28 Buddha puja sessions.  You can  offer jasmine flowers to the Buddha  throughout the 100 days' prayers.  Blessing water will be distributed on 10th of November (Saturday) at  8.30pm.
